Harlequin Hair Bows, Free Crochet Pattern

Here is another free Pattern in my Just a Stitch Away pattern series. This pattern for the Half Double Crochet Harlequin Hair Bows utilizes some unique stitches that the half double crochet is essential to. This pattern is created with the half double crochet, Ribbed half double crochet, and the Star stitch (which the half double crochet is a must when working in a star stitch row, as it is the real way to complete the look of the stitch).

Let's begin...

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Each bow measures:
     6.5 inches across;
     3.5 inches deep without curls;
     8 inches deep with curls.


MATERIALS:

·         Red Heart Soft Touch Medium Weight Yarn (5oz/140gr – 290yds/266m per ball)



o   40 yards #4614/Black
o   40 yards #9925/Really Red
o   100 yards #4600/White


·         Crochet hook size G/6-4.00mm 
or size needed to obtain gauge
of 8 half double crochet 
X 6 rows = 2 inches square.
·         yarn needle





·         any size Alice-style headband.
or any type of hair
accessory
·         Hot glue gun / glue sticks.



STITCHES USED / ABBREVIATIONS:
Chain (ch)
Slip stitch (sl st)
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
Beginning Star Stitch (beg. Star St)
Star stitch (Star st)

Hook (hk)
Beginning (beg)
Carry Color Across (cca)
Skip (sk)
Repeat (rep)

PATTERN NOTES:
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Change colors on the last yarn over of the last stitch worked in the set of instructions prior to color change.

To carry color across (cca) hold the dropped color next to the work, crochet around it as you continue. Continue to work around the dropped color until indicated to use the dropped color again. 

When instructed to work in a star stitch, work in the closing chain-1 space.


PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS

1ST BOW:
BOW

With white, ch 17.

Row 1: Hdc in the 3rd ch from hk, hdc in each of next 14 chs, changing to the Red yarn on the last hdc, turn.

FO White yarn.



Row 2: Ch 3, work a beg Star st, work 6 more Star sts, hdc in the top of the sk 2 chs of the previous row, turn.


Row 3: Ch 2, work 2 hdc in each of the next 7 Star sts, hdc in the top of the beg ch-3 of the previous row, turn.




Row 4: Ch 3, work a beg Star st, work 6 more Star sts, hdc in the top of the beginning ch-2 on the previous row, turn.






Rows 5 – 13: [Consecutively repeat Rows 3 and 4] 4 times, then repeat Row 3 once more.




Row 14: Ch 3, work a beg Star st, work 6 more Star sts, hdc in the turning ch-2 of the previous row changing to the White yarn, turn.
FO Red yarn.




Row 15: Ch 2, work 2 hdc in each of the next 7 Star sts, hdc in the top of the beg ch-3 of the previous row.
Fasten off. Set aside.




BOW BAND
With White yarn, ch 6.
Row 1: Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hk, hdc in each of next 3 chs, turn.
Rows 3 – 9: Ch 1, work 1 Rhdc in each of the next 4 hdc, turn.
DO NOT FO.




CURLS
Continuing working with White yarn, ch 1,
·         [sl st in the next hdc on Row 9 of Bow Band,
·         *ch 32 changing to Red yarn on the last ch worked (cca),
·         work 4 hdc in the 3rd ch from hk, work 4 hdc in each of the next 4 chs changing to White yarn on last hdc worked (FO Red yarn),
·         work 4 hdc in each of the next 5 chs,
·         work 3 hdc in each of the next 17 chs,
·         work 1 hdc in each of the next 3 chs,**
·         sl st in the same hdc on Row 9 of Bow Band as the last sl st worked,
·         rep from * to ** once more]
Rep from [ to ] two more times,
Sl st in the next hdc on Row 9 of Bow Band.
FO, leaving a 10” tail for sewing.




COMPLETING THE BOW
Form Bow Band into a circle by lining up the unused loops of the beg ch with the last row worked (this is the same row the curls were worked on). Thread the 10” tail onto a yarn needle and sew the lined up stitches together. Fasten off.
Push the Bow through the circle formed with the Bow Band. Line the Bow Band around Row 8 of the bow.

2nd BOW:
Repeat all the instructions for the 1st Bow, replacing the Red yarn with Black yarn.


ASSEMBLY:
Secure the Bow Bands in place with a hot glue gun.
Glue 1 Bow on each side of an Alice-style headband.
