HDC Harlequin Mask Free Crochet Pattern

As a part of my inspiration to create patterns using variations of only one stitch (plus the chain and slip stitch), I've written up this quick pattern for the Half Double Crochet Harlequin Mask.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

Pattern is written for size Small, instructions for Medium, Large, and Extra Large or written in brackets and indicated in different color print. Instructions with no brackets and in black print are for all sizes: S (M, L, XL).

Small is made to fit Toddler/Child
Distance between center of eyes:
     1.75 – 2 inches;
Total width (without ties):
     6 (inches;
Depth: 2.75 inches.
Medium is made to fit Tween/Youth
Distance between center of eyes:
     2 – 2.25 inches;
Total width (without ties):
     6.5 inches;
Depth: 3.25 inches.
Large to fit adult woman.
Distance between center of eyes:
     2.5 – 2.75 inches;
Total width (without ties):
     7 inches;
Depth: 3.5 inches
Extra Large to fit adult male.
Distance between center of eyes:
     2.75 – 3 inches;
Total width (without ties):
     7.5 inches;
Depth: 3.75 inches.

·         Red Heart Soft Touch Medium Weight Yarn (5oz/140gr – 290yds/266m per ball)

o   Small amounts each:

§  Color B = #4614/Black
§  Color A = #9925/Really Red
§  Color C = #4600/White

Crochet hook size G/6-4.00mm
for Gauge:

8 half double crochet X 6 rows = 2 inches square.
yarn needle for working in ends

Chain (ch)
Slip stitch (sl st)
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
Half double crochet 2 together       (hdc2tog)
3-half double crochet puff stitch (Pst)
Hook (hk)
Round (rnd)
Color A (CA)
Color B (CB)
Color C (CC)
Carry Color Across (cca)
Skip (sk)
Repeat (rep)
Fasten Off (FO)


Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Join with a slip stitch unless otherwise indicated.

Change colors on the last yarn over of the last stitch worked in the set of instructions prior to color change.

To carry color across (cca) hold the dropped color next to the work, crochet around it as you continue. Continue to work around the dropped color until indicated to use the dropped color again. 

Rnd 1 is worked in 2 sides.
1st Side:
With CA, ch 13 (15, 17, 19), join in 1st ch to form ring.
Rnd 1:  Ch 2, work 22 (24, 26, 28) hdc around ring just formed. DO NOT join. FO.
2nd Side:
Join CB in the same beg ch-1 as the 1st side joining was used when forming ring;
Ch 13 (15, 17, 19), join (in same ch-1 as CB was initially joined) to form ring.

Rnd 1: Turn, ch 2, work 22 (24, 26, 28) hdc around ring just formed, join in the next hdc (this is the last hdc made on 1st side) changing to CA as you join.
DO NOT Fasten Off CB, cca as you work.

Rnd 2: Rnd 2 is worked all the way around 1st and 2nd Sides. With CA, ch 1, work 1 hdc in next hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of next 6 (7, 8, 9) hdc, 2 hdc in each of next 4 hdc, 1 hdc in each of next 6 (7, 8, 9) hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc**, work 1 hdc2tog changing to CB; (FO CA only), with CB, hdc2tog, repeat from * to **, hdc2tog, join in beginning ch-1 changing to CC. FO CB only.

Rnd 3: With CC, slip stitch in each of next 2 hdc, *[ch 3, sk next 2 hdc, Pst in next hdc] 3 (4, 4, 4) times; ch 60 (70, 80, 90), [Pst in next hdc, ch 3, sk next 2 hdc] 3 (4, 4, 4) times**, sl st in each of next 12 (4, 8, 12) hdc, repeat from * to **, sl st in next 2 hdc, join to 1st sl st.
Fasten Off.
